Health, Safety and Environmental Leader

Purpose of the Role: To develop, plan, coordinate, advise and monitor the Company’s Health, Safety and Environmental function so as to ensure the implementation of the HSE strategies and objectives in line with the Company’s Corporate goals and compliance with Statutory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement health, safety and environmental strategy, policy and objectives in line with Company’s corporate goals and the Statutory requirements.
  • Develop emergency response plans and Safe Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for all tasks.
  • Nurture a HSE culture throughout the organization through training and leadership.
  • Develop and implement HSE initiatives which enhance the Company’s corporate image and reputation.
  • Report, investigate and identify root causes of HSE accidents and incidents and recommend remedial action and follow through the implementation.
  • Liaise with the relevant HSE regulatory authorities, service providers, business partners and other stakeholders.
  • Lead and manage the HSE internal audits in all branches and coordinate the statutory audit programs Advise management on all HSE issues.
Qualifications and Experience:
  •  A Bachelors degree in a science or engineering discipline from a recognized University PLUS a Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health and/or Environmental Management studies from a recognized training Institution.
  • A minimum of two (2) years relevant working experience in a manufacturing or engineering establishment or as an Occupational Safety and Health Officer in DOHSS.
  • Approval as a Safety and Health Advisor or Environmental Auditor and/or Impact Assessor will be an added advantage.
Key Competencies:
  • Good Leadership, communication, interpersonal, influencing, training and team working skills.
  • Ability to work independently without supervision.
  • Ability to foster a harmonious working relationship with the relevant regulatory authorities, government officers, business partners and other stakeholders.
  • Good HSE inspection, auditing and incidents investigation skills.
  • Good working knowledge and experience of HSE statutory requirements.

The Regional Office for Eastern Africa is based in Nairobi, Kenya and it supports partner organizations and programmes at both national and regional level in the four countries.

The organisation target small scale farmers and the main activities concentrate around Sustainable Land Use Systems, Agroforestry, Soil & Water Conservation, Food Security and Income Generation.

The Regional Office for Eastern Africa wishes to recruit for the position of Programme Advisor - Monitoring and Evaluation / Geographical Information System who reports to the Programme Director.

The purpose of the position is to provide guidance on the overall M&E system and implementation processes and related activities to both the programme and partners, and ensure timely and relevant information is availed to the programme management, partners and other stakeholders.

The individual will also manage mapping activities by providing GIS support, data collection and data analysis processes and facilitation of knowledge building, management and sharing aspects.

He/she will have the overall responsibility for planning, co-ordinating and organising all M&E and GIS related work.

The key duties and responsibilities include:

* Ensure an effective M&E system for the organisation
* Lead and guide regular monitoring activities
* Manage external evaluations and assessments
* Manage reporting processes for monitoring and evaluation

* Manage and coordinate data and information collection and analysis
* Provide GIS support to the organisation

The candidate we are looking for should be a holder of BSc in Geographical Information System, Statistics, or Natural resource management with specialization in mathematics or statistics. MSc in the same fields will be an added advantage.

The person should have at least 5 years’ experience in M&E and data processing, analysis and mapping, work experience in use of statistical and mapping software packages (e.g. SPSS/ArcGIS etc).

In addition the individual should possess high level experience working with GIS and GPS on a technical level, knowledge in remote sensing using IDRISI, ArcGIS and Spatial analyst, and
experience in database design and management.

African Eco-labelling Mechanism (AEM) Executive Manager Job in Nairobi Kenya

Project / Field of activity

The African Union (AU), UNEP and UNECA in cooperation with the African Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production (ARSCP) and African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) have launched the development of the African Eco-labelling Mechanism (AEM) funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and implemented by GIZ.

The AEM aims at promoting intra-African and international trade, and enabling African economies to adapt and contribute to the mitigation of climate change.

AEM is in the process of creating a crosssectoral Pan African eco-label known as Eco Mark Africa (EMA) which will be awarded to organizations meeting the criteria defined in the eco-labelling standards.

The AEM will define a clear set of sustainability criteria for agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and tourism. In these sectors, EMA certified producers will have to comply with environmental, social, economic and climate-relevant requirements. EMA will be based on a certifiable sustainability standard as well as a recognition system for other sustainability- or eco-labelling schemes.

The AEM Secretariat has been set up and is hosted at ARSO, and the AEM governance structures comprising of an Executive Board and Technical Board are being established.

Through Sector Working Groups, the EMA standards for certification and recognition are currently being developed, according to local and regional needs, as well as international requirements.

Defining a viable strategy to ensure long-term financial self-sufficiency of the AEM and the marketing of Eco Mark Africa in cooperation with national and international partners will be other decisive tasks of the project. Finally, the project aims at developing the capacity of African accreditation and certification bodies and facilitating access of producers to certification.

Responsibilities

As Executive Manager, you will be a member of the project team that develops and institutionalizes the AEM in close cooperation with relevant national, regional and international organisations.

You will play a key role in ensuring the project's success and in achieving the objectives agreed with BMU and the AEM Executive Board.

You will be responsible for the implementation of the programme strategy and for the promotion of the AEM across the continent and internationally. Together with the partner organisations as well as other members of the project team, you will lead the project so as to ensure the long-term sustainability of the AEM programme.

In this context, you will work closely with the Sounding and Executive Boards Members, AEM programme coordinator, the project manager of GIZ’s Kenya Office and colleagues from GIZ headquarters in Germany who will support the project implementation, particularly as regards developing the standards and benchmarking system and drawing up a marketing concept.

You will play the key role in raising support for the AEM from political institutions and economic networks. You will be required to report progress of project implementation to the AEM Executive Board biannually.

To ensure the long-term viability of the AEM program it is highly desirable that you develop a commitment to the AEM beyond the project phase.

You will commit yourself to add value the African original products in the areas of agriculture, forestry, fisheries and eco-tourism by encouraging the African producers to recognize and endow their products with the AEM standard.

Qualifications

You have a Master’s degree in, economics, environmental or agricultural sciences, or in a similar area, and have gained at least ten years of experience as an officer, and/or advisor or manager.

You have comprehensive expert knowledge on voluntary sustainability standards and you are soundly acquainted with environmental and climate protection.

You have finely tuned communication skills, are an excellent networker, excel under pressure, and act sensitively in an intercultural environment.

Proficiency in English is a must and fluency in French is an asset.

Duration

The position is for one year and renewable depending on performance and deliverables.

Identify conservation issues at the 4 counties and the specific needs of counties and how these needs can be fulfilled by formation of county CSOs/private sector networks.
Publicize the vision, mission and activities of the 4 County CSOs/Private Sector Networks.
Prepare all necessary information and agenda for meetings and workshops organised or envisaged in the project.
Facilitate meetings of the 4 County CSOs/Private Sector Networks, workshops and exchange visits envisaged in the project.
Provide technical supports in publications and in development of project materials (leaflets and policy briefs).
Support the 4 County CSOs/Private Sector Networks to prioritize conservation issues, identify appropriate strategic means of intervention and alert them on opportunities.
Provide a supportive role to 4 County CSOs/Private Sector Networks in formulation and analysis of national and county policies, strategies and laws, and in advocacy.

  • To maintain records of trained artisans/technicians, Trainers of Users and beneficiaries distribution lists for different solar systems
  • To work with the trained local artisans and technicians and ensure effective maintenance services for solar systems are provided on a timely basis
  • To prepare activity reports and share with the Project Officer

  • A Bachelors Degree in Social Work/degree in agriculture, environmental science, education, BA in sociology.
  • At least 3 years relevant experience
